Donna L. Hollander has been a practicing visual artist for the past 47 years.
A native to Los Angeles, California, Donna has been living in Whittier for the last 28 years.
During my undergraduate studies I was a commercial production potter.
After I received my masters I taught Sculpture, including stone sculpting and life sculpture at Orange Coast College for 4 years. Then I went to work as a mannequin sculptor in the Visual Merchandising industry. I directed teams of professional and union sculptors in producing large pieces of commercial sculpture. Clients included Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. As well as many large pieces for Warner Brothers, Disney, Nordstrom’s and other large department stores.
I married John Young, an industrial designer in 1994. Together we developed a successful line of gift ware incorporating our vast and mutual skill-sets.
In 1999 I started making mosaics.
I have taught drawing, painting, sculpture, and mosaic to children as young as 5 and adults as old as 70.
Mosaic is a metaphor for how inspirations come:
Shiny bits and pieces, here and there.
Using dichroic glass brings a level of magic to my work.
Mosaic is eye candy, colorful and fluid.
It's sculpting with color.
It's any material you want to use.
It's ancient and never gets old.
It's permanent. It marks time.
